Abnormal Voices: Meet Skyler Wickland, Team Lead, Customer Success

May 22, 2025
When Skyler Wickland joined Abnormal AI in early 2022, he didn’t expect to fall in love with a cybersecurity product. But what surprised him even more was how quickly he’d grow into a leadership role, and how rewarding the journey would be.

Now a Team Lead on the Customer Success team, Skyler is passionate about helping customers realize the full value of Abnormal’s products, while mentoring others who are walking the path he was on just a short time ago. His career journey is marked by drive, collaboration, and a clear sense of purpose-traits that shine through in the way he shows up for his team and customers alike.

Supporting Customers from Day One

Skyler’s work begins the moment a new customer signs on with Abnormal. From that point forward, he’s focused on delivering value, whether it’s guiding a team through product onboarding or walking executives through a strategic business review. And while he’s not on the Technical Support team, he’s just as invested in ensuring the product is fully understood and embraced..”

“I support Abnormal’s customers in Canada starting the day they become a customer,” Skyler explains. “I ensure they’re getting the most out of our solution by understanding the value and educating them on new features.” One of the most rewarding parts of the role? Building relationships that extend beyond the Zoom screen. “I work with customers across all industries throughout Canada,” he says. “While Zoom calls are great, it’s even better to meet with our customers in person.”

A Mission That Matters
Skyler sees his work as a direct contribution to a larger goal: keeping people and organizations safe from evolving cybersecurity threats. “My main goal is to ensure customers are using the product to the fullest,” he says. “That’s what helps keep them safe.”

He recalls one moment that tested his skills and reinforced his mission: when a customer’s new CISO, unfamiliar with Abnormal, considered replacing it with another tool. Skyler worked closely with the team to reestablish Abnormal’s value. “We were able to present how our solution works and the value it brings, which helped retain the partnership.”

Collaboration Over Everything
Even though Skyler leads his own book of business and manages internal projects, he says success at Abnormal is never a solo mission. “Most of my job involves working with various teams,” he shares. “While I might be responsible for building presentations, I always loop in the AEs or other members. It’s always a team effort when supporting our customers.”

That team-first mentality is especially important in a remote environment. Skyler keeps his camera on during team calls and uses Slack to connect beyond work tasks, but what really keeps him engaged is the opportunity to travel and meet customers and colleagues face-to-face.

Growth Fueled by Ownership

In just over two years, Skyler has gone from CSM to Senior CSM to Team Lead. What’s helped him advance so quickly? He credits Abnormal’s culture of ownership and velocity.

“I love how fast we move as a company - it keeps my job interesting and challenging,” he says. “And if you see a chance to make an impact, you can go for it.”

His next goal? Becoming a manager of Customer Success. “I’d love to continue mentoring and helping our teams grow.”

AI That Actually Helps

As someone on the front lines of customer communication, Skyler appreciates how Abnormal not only builds AI-powered products but also uses AI to make internal work smoother. “I’ve used AI to help craft emails, build slides, and prep for QBRs,” he says. “We use it in every quarterly deck we present to customers.”

Still, even the best tech can’t replace the human connection Skyler brings to every interaction. “Helping customers communicate the value of Abnormal across their organization-that’s the most important part of what I do.”

The People Make It

Ask Skyler what keeps him at Abnormal, and he doesn’t hesitate: “I’m having fun!” he laughs. “Some days can be extremely challenging, but the majority are fun. I strongly believe in our mission and that’s a big part of why I stay.”

The other reason? The people. “Every company says they have the best people, but we truly do. I’ve interacted with almost every department, and everyone is helpful and kind.”

Advice for Future Abnormal Employees

Skyler’s advice to anyone thinking about joining the company? “Have fun! Security can be serious, but it doesn’t have to be. Don’t be afraid to jump in and raise your hand. Share those great ideas!
